Written by Max in 1994 and newly arranged for the album Long Way Home.
"This song is about my early childhood in the Ohio River Valley. I wrote it in late 1994 when I was being the fickle artist and changing musical course again, to the consternation of my band."
Lyrics
first book i ever read
every word was sacred
most of the time you could jump across it
til it floods, up to the bridge
yellow mud, boilin' out alive
first book i ever read
crawdads and salamanders
i waited up for the moon to happen
she flew inside, i wasn't scared
but when they fight you can hear right through the walls
before she burnt to death
she sat across from me in class
and it was there she asked me to kiss her
i leaned across, i closed my eyes
but to the leaves, the story's in the light
now the leaves get washed into the creek
now the leaves get buried in the mud
shovel comes and opens up the cliff
pictures tumble back into the creek
and i was hopelessly tangled up when they got home
first book i ever read
every word was sacred
most of the time you could jump across it
til it floods, up to the bridge
til it floods, up to the bridge
til it floods, up to the bridge
yellow mud, boilin' out alive

"An impossibly cool band whose members all look like Max Carmichael are playing on a tiny cramped stage, the song is, ‘’ Yellow Mud’’, we think of the Beatles, but not in Hamburg, rather in CBGBs, Jonathan Richman looks on and takes notes, a yuppie in the corner is loudly demanding a coloured drink, perhaps because his girlfriend is paying too much attention to the band."
