Written by Max in 1988 and newly arranged for the album Promised Land.
"When I was 8 years old my mother announced that we were going to move from our home in southeast Ohio to her home town in southern Indiana. I was intensely attached to where we lived at the time, a paradise of wild nature where I had built my own mythology around the trees, the rocks, and the fish in the stream. My father was going somewhere else and it was like I was becoming an orphan and an exile at the same time, pulled by a strong current down the muddy Ohio River to an unknown new land.
"Moses was recorded repeatedly and performed by Terra Incognita and Wickiup between 1988 and 1995, with Wendell Rand contributing the bass riff in the verse."
Lyrics
I am moses of indiana
down the river I go drifting
I am moses of indiana
down the river I go drifting
down the river of west virginia
down the river I go drifting
down the river of west virginia
down the river I go drifting

OHIO
I am moses of indiana
green around me rushes whisper
coil around me willow shavings
willow basket she was weaving
Hide me away in cattail rushes
willow basket rock me to sleep
muddy water drag me over
down the river of ohio

OHIO
Silent runs the big ohio
til I wake in indiana
foggy valley, sweet corn rustling
hoosiers coming down to greet me
Voices in my dream are fading
pictures in my head are changing
maybe this will be my home
maybe this will be my promised land
