Written by Max in 1989.
"This grew out of an earlier Terra Incognita jam called 'Can't Buy a House'. As I reworked it from year to year, my growing love for the desert gradually turned it into a completely different song, encapsulating the smallness of man in the vastness of a timeless, primeval landscape.
"A work in progress – we were just beginning to learn this song when the video was shot, a few weeks before the earthquake destroyed my home and studio. The timing was uncanny. Following coyote's dictum, I was homeless again.
"One of my favorite parts is the dreamy instrumental break with a unique guitar duel between me and lead guitarist Mike Elias."
Lyrics
come daylight
coyote hassled
laid down the law
laid down the law
come daylight
coyote hassled
laid down the law
laid down the law
no houses in this place
man and beast must circulate
no houses in this place
man and beast must circulate
i see a mountain
i see a mountain way beyond
i see a mountain
i see a mountain way beyond
you best get movin'
so you make it 'fore the evenin' comes
cold, mighty cold on this ground
mighty cold
on this ground
cold, mighty cold on this ground
mighty cold
on this ground
come daylight
coyote hassled
he woke me up
he woke me up
come daylight
coyote hassled
he woke me up
he woke me up
get movin' child
get movin' child
man and beast
man and beast
get movin' child
get movin' child
man and beast
man and beast
i see a mountain
i see a mountain way beyond
i see a mountain
i see a mountain way beyond
you best get movin
so you make it 'fore the evenin' comes
cold, mighty cold on this ground
mighty cold
on this ground
cold, mighty cold on this ground
mighty cold
on this ground
cold on this ground
cold on this ground
cold on this ground
cold on this ground
open house
house with no place to hide
house made of wind and sky
house which no money can buy
open house
house with no place to hide
house made of wind and sky
house which no money can buy
feel the mountain wearing down
blowing in my eyes and in my mouth
in the open house
in the open house
feel the mountain wearing down
blowing in my eyes and in my mouth
in the open house
in the open house
in the open house
