Max recorded the traditional song Rank Stranger with his band Terra Incognita in 1987, and it was included on the Ralph Records compilation album Potatoes, which is considered an inspiration for the alt-country movement. The Village Voice praised the album, calling Rank Stranger "the album's standout," and Terra Incognita flew to New York to headline a weekend gig at The Knitting Factory.
As can be heard in this song, Terra Incognita regularly used two basses in their arrangements. John Walker was the second bass player on the New York tour.
