Fish in the River is one of Max's most heartfelt and personal songs, inspired by his roots in the old-time gospel music he learned from his Scots-Irish elders in the western Appalachians, giving voice to the dream that led him to his current home.

"In this recording I'm channeling a little bit of my favorite uncle, Wib Williamson, who often led the singing at family reunions. Anyone familier with Ralph Stanley's brother Carter, who passed away in 1966, might also hear some echoes of his world-weary voice."
