Terra Incognita in the Financial District
Guerilla performance

Terra Incognita was an art space and a series of bands founded by Max in San Francisco. It lasted 9 years and was ended by the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Its first incarnation was as a group of artists who were mostly amateur musicians, some of them practically beginners. They met twice a week to improvise music and noise and to plan and rehearse ambitious public performances, which they documented on video and audio tape, sometimes with a technical crew.
The Financial District performance was extensively planned and carefully rehearsed. It took place throughout the corporate lunch hour and was intended to disrupt office workers from their routines and focus their attention on the mysterious aspects of everyday environments, and the spirits that dwell within. They mapped out a route connecting a series of sites chosen for their symbolic value or interactive potential. At each, they delivered a site-specific performance.
