Staking trees and shrubs? Why do some retail nurseries insist on staking perfectly healthy and free-standing trees and shrubs?

by James K. Sayre

Purely personal opinion:. Question: why do some retail nurseries insist on staking perfectly healthy shrubs and small trees? Mother Nature doesn't provide stakes for shrubs and trees. Staking merely handicaps the natural growing tendency of shrubs and trees and impedes their own natural growth instincts. I purchased two small Eucalyptus trees and one Pyracantha shrub, all of which had been staked by the nursery. After the stakes were removed these plants struggled to grow in an upright position. Obviously, I should only purchase shrubs and trees that are unstaked.

End.
