Rockridge Weather
by James K. Sayre
Most of the coastal regions of northern California have a mild Mediterranean climate, with cool wet winters and cool cloudy summers.
The local weather of the Rockridge district of Oakland, California is slightly different from the weather reported for Oakland, which is actually recorded at the Oakland International Airport, which lies next to the San Francisco Bay. Rockridge typically has an afternoon high temperature a few degrees lower than that of Oakland. Also, it seems to receive about 25% more rainfall than Oakland (recorded at the Oakland Airport, next to the Bay), at least according to the weather records which I have been keeping in 2003 and 2004. My records show 23.17 inches of rain in Rockridge, while the Oakland Tribune reports a season total of 18.16 inches of rain.
Note: on 22 February 2005, the partial season Rockridge district rainfall was running about 11% higher than that reported in the newspapers for Oakland.
Rockridge rainfall for season 2004-2005 (July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005): 36.22"
July 2004 = 0.00"
August 2004 = 0.00"
September 2004 = 0.60"
October 2004 = 3.09"
November 2004 = 1.79"
December 2004 = 7.52"
January 2005 = 5.65"
February 2005 = 5.53
March 2005 = 5.77"
April 2005 = 2.40"
May 2005 = 2.02"
June 2005 = 1.84"
Total - 36.22"
For comparison, check the newspaper listings for the Oakland rainfall totals (measured at the Oakland International Airport) for the season 2004 - 2005: The San Francisco Chronicle: 28.43", the Contra Costa Times: 28.13" and the Oakland Tribune: 28.88". These three values average out to" 28.48" rainfall. Thus the annual rainfall in the Rockridge District is about 27% higher than that recorded at the Oakland Airport.
