Nightcaps
By James K. Sayre
When I used to go camping in the summer time in the mountains and sleep inside of a tent, I used to notice that my head was cold, so I would jerry-rig a hat or an extra sweater to keep it warm through the night.
I remember reading the "Night before Christmas" poem and seeing the old man with his quaint nightcap upon his head. I couldn't understand why anyone would want to wear a hat or cap to bed. Now I realize that many folks lived in poorly-heated homes which could be quite cold at night. Now I have gotten used to sleeping with the window open and the air being nicely cool. A cotton, polyester or wool nightcap is a real comfort and is an aid to good sleep.
