Having used DOS and the early versions of Windows operating systems (OS), I have been curious about the underlying structure of the new Windows XP operating system. Here is a link to a Microsoft Corporation site that explains some of the structure of XP (note: the article presumes familiarity with both Windows 32 and C++, but even without said familiarity, one can get a flavor of the basis of the new XP OS}: Windows XP: Search for "XP: Kernel Improvements" and you should find the article, written by Mark Russinovich and David Solomon, entitled, "Windows XP: Kernel Improvements Create a More Robust, Powerful, and Scalable OS."
