Whimsey:

by James K. Sayre

Whimsey: these days, it may indicate something fanciful, silly, eccentric, curious, odd or fantastic. This category of essays and comments may be a little difficult to fill in these days of political correctness and polarized politics, but I will present a few links to some of my more whimsical essays and to a couple of other other web sites.

Etymology or roots of whimsey: the notion of whimsey (or whimsy) seems to have been taken from whim-wham, which is a term was first used about five hundred years ago to describe a fanciful or ornamental piece of clothing, toy or plaything, depending on which dictionary one consults.
