Weigela (Weigela florida) - Honeysuckle Family (Caprifolaceae).

[Etymology: weigela Modern Latin , named after C. E. Weigel, (1748 - 1831), a German man who has been variously characterized as a chemist, physican, naturalist and Professor].

This is a deciduous shrub that may grow to about six feet high and about six feet wide. It has arching branches that may reach to the ground. It has oval-to-oblong-shaped dark green leaves and produces clusters (corymbs) of white-to-pink-to-red funnel-shaped flowers in the spring and summer. Capsules containing unwinged seeds soon follow the flowers. Best cultivated in USDA hardiness zones 5-8 in North America. Tolerates partial shade to full sun and prefers slightly acidic soil. Propagated by seeds, stem cuttings and root division. Native to eastern Asia. Many cultivars exist.

Other name: Old-fashioned Weigela.
