To the Editor:

Your recent Bay Area section front-page story, "Pit bull attacks S. F. police horse" (The Chronicle, November 24) was truly sickening. Taking a vicious dog off-leash in public is unleashing a potentially deadly weapon. Dog owners who unleash their vicious dogs in public areas should be sentenced to thirty days in jail. Let us define a vicious dog as one that attacks and bites a person, a pet or a police horse. Vicious breeds of dogs (or breeds easily trained to be vicious) such as pit bulls, rottweilers and doberman pinschers should be outlawed in urban and suburban areas. Why are we still putting up with medieval folkways by continuing to allow vicious dogs to run freely?

Yours truly,
