The Quonset Hut

by James K. Sayre

My grandfather's electrical business was housed in a Quonset Hut in Detroit, Michigan in the 1950s. It was a large, open structure built of corrugated (wavy) steel in the shape of a half-cylinder. It looked like a very large gray pineapple juice can, cut in half lengthwise and set on the ground. Quonset huts were anchored to steel bolts set in cement. The two half-circle ends were covered with steel sheeting. Doors and windows were inserted into the structure as needed.

The Quonset Hut design apparently originated in England in World War I, where is was an inexpensive, and easy and quickly construction shelter for men and materials. The name Qunoset was from Quonset Point, Rhode Island were they were first manufactured in United States.
