Painting the house: my summer job

by James K. Sayre

The summer after graduating from high school, I was given the job of painting the outside of our house. It was a big job and actually took most of the summer. For this work, I was paid the princely sum of three hundred dollars. For me, back then, it was good money. This was back in the days before latex paint had been widely used in outdoor applications. So I used a white enamal paint that had to be cleaned off with turpentine. We had a two-story house, so ladders were needed. My father had at least one wooden extension ladder. We used ladders in the summer picking of cherries from two trees on our property: a small tree that had sweet red cherries and a much larger tree that produced sweet black cherries.

End.
