Chips ahoy, matey: personal identity information that would be stored in an implanted under-the-skin scannable microchip was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 14 October 2004. This information would then be keyed with a computer database of personal and medical information. Brave new world? 1984 + 20? Total security? Total dictatorship? Total control? You decide.

Back in 1995, the City of Novato in northern California required that all cat owners have their pets implanted with identification chips. I speculated at the time in a personal essay, that this implanted identification system would be first extended prisoners in the United States for reasons of "security" and then to welfare recipients to "prevent fraud." After that, identification microchips woiuld be implanted in school children for their "protection." Finally, all Americans would be forced to receive implants of personal identification microchips under the guise of "national security" and "anti-terrorism."

Chips ahoy, matey.
