Trying to learn to play the drums in 3rd grade to impress a girl.

by James K. Sayre

Back in third grade, in 1951, the cutest and most popular girl was June Anderson. Her boyfriend back then was Jay Morris and he played the drums. So it finally occurred to me to learn to play the drums, too. After six weeks of tapping the drumsticks on little square pads (for some reason, I didn't rate actually having a real drum at home to practice on: maybe the music teacher didn't want to alienate the parents of a potential drummer, with the loud raucous drumming...), I gave up. It just wasn't worth it. Some eight years later, June asked me to go to a Sadie Hawkins dance with her. By then, the bloom was off the third grade rose and she was just another girl. Some girls peak way too early.

End.
