Airplanes

Since the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) , the largest airport in the Bay Area, lies only seven miles north of Foster City, there is considerable overflight here. The bayside edge of Foster City lies directly under one landing path. There are a considerable number of landings in the daytime and in the early evening. By custom, there are very few landings allowed after 11 pm, to allow Peninsula residents quiet for sleeping at night. Being under the landing path is much quieter than being under the takeoff path, so the airplanes landing overhead are mostly a source of interest and entertainment. Some residents of Foster City and nearby areas have reported that have been able to smell jet fuel (kerosene) in a air after planes have passed by, but it does not appear to be a major problem at this time. There also have been some reports of objects falling from the sky, but fortunately, these are infrequent. Sometimes "blue ice" has fallen from airplanes into Foster City from planes on their landing paths. Birdlife does not appear to be seriously affected by these overflights, although this is merely the author's speculation and is not documented by independent sources.

End.
