Chapter 17: Sketches of Mammals

.Black-tailed jackrabbits - can be seen in large vacant grassy fields, feeding and resting. Most active and visible in the early morning and evening hours; sometimes stand on their hind legs to better survey their surroundings; several individuals observed in fennel field in March 1995.

.Harbor Seals; - one observed swimming in upper part of Belmont Slough, heading towards open water at noon on 1 Sept. 1994; one observed in Bay 100 yards off Beach Park Blvd. at 1:10 PM on 23 Sept. 1995.

Gray Squirrel - Sciurus griseus; observed one in lot next to Apt. Bldg. at 11:15AM on 16 Oct. 1994; ran from under one "Boring Tree" to another; one black squirrel observed near junk food shops in March 1995; another gray squirrel observed near Beach Park Blvd., west of Foster City Blvd in 9/95.

Black Squirrel - observed near Beach Park Blvd. between Foster City Blvd. and Post Office - 8 AM - 9/2/95.

Brown rat .Rattus norvegicus;- observed on levee, foraging from rocks to weeds for seeds, 6 PM, 1 August 1995.

Mouse undetermined species, possibly Salt marsh harvest mouse, observed on beach in pickleweed, 3:30 PM, 8/27/95; second individual, small (3" long) brownish, observed running into a patch of Salt Grass, Distichlis spp. on levee beach 3:30 PM, 9/13/95..
