Copyright: the legal basis for protecting creative works of writers, artists, musicians and others. In recent years, the U. S. Congress has increased the copyright protection of writers, artists and musicians. Currently, the minute that you write something down on your computer's word processor or more traditionally, with pencil or pen, it is a protected work, covered by our federal copyright laws.

The United States Constitution, in Article One, Section 8, granted to Cnngress the power to protect the written works of authors. In 1790, the first U. S. Copyright law was passed. These Copyright laws have been modified and added to several times since 1790.
