Blond Cheat movie review

by James K. Sayre

The Blond Cheat movie plot centers around a high-class pawn shop located in pre-war (pre-World War II, that is) London. A pricey pair of diamond earrings are pawned right at closing time by the harried clerk, Mike (played by Derrick De Marney). He then discovers that the diamond earrings are embedded in the ears of the beautiful young woman, Julie (played by 21-year old Joan Fontaine). As she tries to leave the pawn shop, with the earrings, he stops her just outside the shop and says, "What am I going to do with you?" She says, "Whatever you like, only not out here, it's the public." He says, "Get back inside!" The fun has only begun for this pair. She is stylishly dressed, topped off with a long ermine-fur piece that is tipped in white and which bounces around fetchingly with her every step. He is totally smitten, but, naturally, is in a state of denial about it...

This screwball comedy movie was made in England in 1938.

It runs about 61 minutes in length; at least the copy that I taped from the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel a couple of years ago. This movie has a little of everything: a strong cast of character actors, tales of Puma hunting in India (note: Pumas or Mountain Lions only live in North America), social climbers, a practical joke, family disputes and even Baked Alaska,

End.
